The Impact of Diet on Oral Health

Dental tarter is a common problem in most domestic cats and dogs resulting from a build-up of dental plaque; which is primarily made of food particles and bacteria. Studies have reported that existence of dental tarter is in 86% of cats between the ages of 1-4 years and in all cats 5 years and older.

A number of options are available to the pet owner to control and maintain the long term oral Smart Toys For Birds of their pets. Oral hygiene practice on a regular basis is most effective approach. However, pets need to be conditioned to such procedures on a long term basis. As a result, most owners look to diet or chew treats as a simpler, more convenient, however less effective, way of achieving this goal.

Numerous studies have shown that feeding a regular dry diet alone, Dog Pet Shop compared to a canned diet will reduce the rate of plaque and tarter formation. Studies have also shown that feeding a dry diet coated with sodium hexametaphosphate (a component of some pet toothpaste) reduced tarter formation by 50-80 percent in dogs. A similar preventive effect was also shown in cats. Medical Dental formula is an example of a food containing hexametaphosphate.

Other studies have shown the regular use of rawhide chew strips resulted in a modest reduction of tarter formation, but when these treats were coated with sodium hexametaphosphate, again the Dog Pet Shop showed a significant tarter reduction. This research reinforces the opinion that the build-up plaque and the impacton oral health can be affected by the use of certain diets and chew treats alone.

To obtain long term oral health, oral bacteria must be controlled by minimizing plaque build-up. This is best achieved by practicing oral home care on our pets from an early age.

Merlot's Rollercoaster Ride of Popularity

Merlot is a red wine grape that is used as a blending grape and for varietal wines. Merlot-based wines typically have average body with trace of berry, plum, and currant. Its softness and stoutness, combined with its earlier ripening, makes Antique Picture a model grape to blend with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. This suppleness has helped to make it one of the most popular red wine varietals in the United States and Chile.

The most basic recorded mention of Merlot was in the remarks of a local Bordeaux official who in 1784 labeled wine made from the grape in the Libournais region as one of the area's best. The name comes from the French provincial patois word Merlot, meaning young blackbird. By the 19th century it was being frequently planted in the Mdoc on the Left Bank of the Gironde. It was originally confirmed in Italy around Venice under the synonym Bord in 1855. The grape was launched into the Swiss, sometime in the 19th century and was recorded in the Swiss canton of Ticino between 1905 and 1910. "Researchers at University of California, Davis believe that the grape is an offspring of Cabernet Franc and is a sibling of Carmnre."

After a sequence of delays that consist of a severe frost in 1956 and several vintages in the 1960s lost to rot, French authorities in Bordeaux banned new plantings of Merlot vines between 1970 and 1975. Until 1993, the Chilean wine industry incorrectly sold a large quantity of wine made from the Carmenere grape as Merlot. In that year, genetic studies exposed that much of what had been grown as Merlot was actually Carmenere. The classification of Chilean Merlot is a catch-all to include wine that is made from a blend of random amounts of Merlot and Carmenere. With Merlot ripening 3 weeks earlier than Carmenere, these wines vary significantly in eminence depending on harvesting.

Merlot grapes are identified by their loose bunches of large berries. The color has less of a blue/black shade than Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and with a thinner skin; the grapes also have less tannins. In addition to a contrast against Cabernet, a Merlot grape tends to have higher sugar content and lower malic acid. Merlot prospers in cold soil, mostly ferrous clay. The vines have a tendency to bud early which gives it some hazard to cold frost and its thin skin increases its vulnerability to Antique Gold Watches It normally ripens up to two weeks earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon. Water stress is important to the vine with it thriving in How To Antique Furniture drained soil more so than at base of a slope.

Merlot was popular, but then took a dip because of the movie Sideways. Throughout the film, Miles addresses dotingly of the red wine varietal Pinot Noir. Following the film's U.S. release in October 2004, Merlot sales dropped 2% while Pinot Noir sales increased 16% in the Western United States. A related trend transpired in British wine outlets. Sales of Merlot plummeted after the film's release most likely due to Miles' disapproving remarks about the varietal in the film.

Wooden Fishing Boats - From Traditional Marsh Pirogues To Wide-Bottomed Drift Boats

So you've inherited that somewhat dubious old wooden Marine Product boat from Texas Boating Accident Lawyers grandpa! You're feeling proud to be the one to carry on the family fishing tradition, but you're also experiencing just a little trepidation at the though of setting out on the wide open expanses of the lake this spring on a boat that has clearly seen better days...

Well, if your newly acquired old wooden fishing boat is looking a little worse for wear, you might do well to remember that wooden boat owners generally accept the fact these kind of boats were not built to last forever.

In fact, some were probably built with the intention that they would be replaced within five or ten years, and not kept going lovingly for decades by well-intentioned descendents of the original owner.

Constant maintenance is probably the key concept here, and you will need to do some serious checking out of the boat's structure before setting out to haul in those prize catches.

Of course, nowadays - with newer wood-based, penetrating epoxy - dry rot has become much less of a problem, but you will still have to keep up the work to keep your boat in shape for the fishing waters.

Apart from the gleaming, grand old dames of yesteryear, contemporary wooden fishing boats are still being built, and you may be surprised at the workmanship and variety available.

You may want to have a look at the beautifully crafted boats such as wide-bottomed drift boats, or the graceful curves of a special viking-type rowing-and-fishing boat.

Some wooden fishing boat builders specialize in traditional Louisiana marsh pirogues and rowing skiffs, and for these you will even be able to find building plans should you be tempted to make a project out of it!

If you just want to have the experience of fishing from a wooden boat on your next fishing trip, you can head out to Ontario, where some fishing resorts have a special wooden fishing boat supplier building them to order.

These beautiful spacious, quiet boats are hand built out of cedar and oak, and equipped with swivel seats, a fishfinder, and all the necessary emergency equipment to make your trip an unforgettable experience.

Back to that old lady grandpa used for his outings on the lake: It may be well worth remembering the saying: "Nothing works on an old boat but the owner"...
